Ofukuro Sushi and Shiya-Go Channel

Gourmet Guide

I ventured into the heart of Sabae with the ever-mysterious Tiger and the endlessly charming Rabbit to dine at the legendary Ofukuro Sushi. And let me tell you — this wasn’t just a dinner. It was an edible journey through the underbelly of flavor itself.

Rabbit, it turns out, is practically sushi royalty here. He’s a regular, and the chef and his wife greeted him with the warmth of family. Naturally, we were granted prime seats at the counter — the throne of the true connoisseur.

First up: the appetizer. Possibly mekabu and squid in vinegar — a tangy, slippery symphony that announced, “You’re not in Kansas anymore.”

Then came the holy grail — sashimi for three. But wait, there’s a twist! Two types of wasabi. TWO. Like battling twin dragons of spice.

Enter: the Mutsu. Firm, rich, and utterly unapologetic.

Then Tiger’s pick — the beef tendon stew. I saw it. I needed it. I stole a bite. No regrets. Melty, meaty magic in a bowl.

And then — a twist! My eyes drifted to the counter, and there it was: a signed board from Shiyago Channel. Yes, the famous YouTuber had graced this very seat. I had seen the video, but the presence hit different in person.

According to the chef, that video session? A feast of Herculean proportions. Food and drink flowing like the tides of destiny.

But back to the sushi: behold, the unagi. Glazed, glistening, glorious.

Next, the elusive Gama shrimp. Sweet. Succulent. A kiss from the ocean itself.

Was this snapper? Memory blurs, but flavor lingers.

And finally, the shrimp heads. Don’t flinch — this was texture and umami royalty.

I’ll admit, the early dishes stole my stomach. By the sushi course, I was already leaning back like a satisfied sumo.

But with Tiger as the evening’s ringleader? The night was far from over. Onward, to the next den of delight…
