About the 2024 House of Representatives Election in Japan

Tech & News

I don’t really understand all the rules around elections. Apparently, there are things you’re not allowed to write. But since this was written before the official campaign announcement, I figure most of it is probably okay. After all, this blog started as a space to vent my frustrations about politics and the economy—and lately I’ve had more to say than I can hold back.

First off, let’s talk about the slush fund issue. Honestly, I don’t even get what “unreported funds” really means. One lawmaker from Reiwa Shinsengumi, Oishi, said that unreported money equals slush funds. But let’s be honest—she’s received some questionable donations herself. And when asked to explain, she just says, “My money is clean.” That kind of double standard is just absurd. The media also makes a huge deal when the LDP is involved, but if it’s Oishi or Azumi from the Constitutional Democrats doing the same thing, it barely makes the news.

Everyone keeps throwing around the term “slush fund,” but no one is focusing on what the real issue is. As far as I’m concerned, there are two main problems when it comes to political money. One: if you’re hiding income, you’re dodging taxes—so pay up. Two: and this is bigger—if the money comes from foreign nationals via party fundraising, that’s a serious issue. If politicians are being influenced by foreign donors, it borders on treason. That kind of behavior could even fall under Article 81 of the Penal Code, which includes capital punishment.

The Kishida faction, known as the Kochikai, is suspected of receiving party donations from Chinese sources. The shift from Takaichi to Ishiba as the party pick was probably due to pressure from that faction.

In short, the LDP is practically split down the middle: pro-China vs. conservative factions.

So here’s my personal ranking for how I decided to vote.

I identify as a conservative, so my party preference looks like this:

-------------------------------
↑ Parties I support

Nippon Conservative Party
Sanseito
Democratic Party for the People
Ishin (Japan Innovation Party)
Liberal Democratic Party
Reiwa Shinsengumi
Komeito
Social Democratic Party
Japanese Communist Party
Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan

↓ Parties I won’t support
-------------------------------

★ I think the Nippon Conservative Party has a real shot. Let’s set aside the whole Iiyama issue for now.

★ Just because the LDP is struggling doesn’t mean I’d ever vote for the Constitutional Democrats. I think they’re the absolute worst.

★ I won’t vote for the LDP on the proportional list, but I still hope the Takaichi faction holds strong.

★ Inada needs to go. In the 1st district, I’m supporting the candidate who stood against the LGBT bill.

If anything in this post ends up violating election law retroactively, I’ll delete it.
